If you want an uncensored AI story generator in 2026, the short list is: Cleus Story Studio for chapter-based novels with adjustable heat and real book export, NovelAI for unlimited co-writing on a flat fee, Sudowrite for polished fiction with editing tools, NovelCrafter if you want to plug in your own AI key or a local model, AI Dungeon for turn-by-turn text adventures, and KoboldCpp if nothing may leave your own computer. They differ most on four things: how much of your story the AI remembers, whether it thinks in chapters, what it lets you export, and who sets the content rules.
Below is what each tool's official pages say as of November 2026: content policy, price and limits. Where a company doesn't publish something, we say so instead of guessing.
Quick answer: which story generator should you pick?
- You want to write and finish a novel with mature scenes, chapter structure and an EPUB at the end: Cleus Story Studio.
- You want unlimited text for a flat monthly price and like steering the prose line by line: NovelAI.
- You write mainstream fiction for publication and want line edits and beta-read style notes: Sudowrite.
- You want to pick the model yourself (including uncensored community models) and pay the AI provider directly: NovelCrafter.
- You want a game, not a manuscript: AI Dungeon.
- You want zero data leaving your machine and have a decent PC: KoboldCpp with a local model.
Which story tool fits you?
Pick the best match for each writer. Answers are based on each tool's official pages.
You want to write a 25-chapter romance with steamy scenes and send it to your e-reader as an EPUB.
1. Cleus Story Studio (cleus.ai/story)
Cleus is our product, so weigh that.
Story Studio is a chapter-based book writer. Each AI reply is a numbered chapter, so a long project reads like a book rather than one endless chat. There are helpers for outlining, brainstorming and writing a blurb, and you can rewrite or revise any passage. Each chapter keeps up to 5 versions, so you can try a scene a different way without losing the first draft.
Memory. Story memory has two parts. The AI keeps its own running memory of characters and plot. Next to it, you get pinned notes of up to 8,000 characters that the AI never overwrites, for facts that must not drift, like ages, looks and the rules of your world.
Mature-content control. Instead of one on/off switch, Story Studio has dials:
- Up to 4 genres at once.
- Physical detail: standard, detailed or vivid.
- Heat level: standard, sensual, steamy or scorching.
- An optional "Explicit wording 18+" toggle.
- Running jokes on or off.
- Story engine 2.5 (the default) uses a page budget so intimate scenes aren't rushed.
The default model for many accounts is Smartest v3, Cleus's own uncensored model. You can switch to other models, including Claude, which softens explicit scenes. For more on how uncensored models are made, see what an abliterated model is.
Illustrations and export. Each book gets one art style, consistent character portraits (you can upload your own), cover art, automatic chapter art and in-scene images. You can set "always keep" and "never show" art rules. Images cost 3 credits each. When you're done, export a real book: EPUB, PDF (6×9 with a table of contents), DOCX, HTML, Markdown or TXT. There's also a reader mode with read-aloud narration on Premium, keyboard shortcuts, and a classic chat-style view at /story/classic. Developers can drive stories through the Story API/MCP.
The lines Cleus won't cross. Cleus allows adult themes with fictional adults. It does not allow sexual content involving minors, and it does not allow explicit images of real people or non-consensual intimate imagery. There's a public takedown form at /report. Clear lines like these mean the rules don't change under you mid-book.
Price. Free accounts get a small daily credit refill with no card required. Premium plans give a larger daily credit allowance.
Limits to know. Story Studio is built for prose fiction, not for turn-based adventure games. If you want a choose-your-path game loop, AI Dungeon fits better.
2. NovelAI
NovelAI is the longest-running "write with you, not for you" storyteller. Its homepage describes the storyteller as built to help you build stories, worlds and characters, lists GLM 4.6 as its current text model, and uses the tagline "No restrictions. No compromises."
Price (as of November 2026, per NovelAI's subscription docs): Tablet $10/month, Scroll $15/month, Opus $25/month. All three paid tiers include unlimited text generation and text-to-speech. Tablet and Scroll include 1,000 Anlas a month for images; Opus includes 10,000. Scroll's main upgrade over Tablet is a larger context size, and Opus goes up to 28,672 tokens of context.
Free trial. The FAQ says the text trial gives 50 actions after registration, provided once with no refreshes.
Content and privacy. NovelAI's terms require users to be 18 or older; they don't list story-content categories. Its FAQ says stories are encrypted in your browser, so story data at rest on its servers is encrypted. It also notes that generation requests contain unencrypted bits of your story, which the AI needs to read. Public posts on its Explore feed go through manual review.
Best for: writers who like steering sentence by sentence and want a flat fee with no per-word metering. Watch out for: no chapter-by-chapter book workflow comparable to a manuscript tool, so plan your own structure.
3. Sudowrite
Sudowrite is a fiction-first writing app. Its homepage lists a Story Bible (idea to outline to chapter beats to drafted text), Write (suggests the next 300 words based on your characters, tone and plot), Expand for rushed scenes, plus Describe, Rewrite, Feedback, Brainstorm and Chat. It runs on Muse 1.5, its own model trained for fiction.
Price (as of November 2026, per sudowrite.com/pricing): Hobby & Student $10/month (225,000 credits), Professional $22/month, Max $44/month (2,000,000 credits, unused credits roll over for 12 months). Professional and Max add developmental edits, line edits and beta reads. The free trial needs no credit card; the page doesn't state how many credits it includes.
Content policy. Sudowrite's own blog says "Sudowrite doesn't restrict mature content" and credits Muse for handling mature scenes. That's marketing copy, though. We couldn't find a formal content policy page that lists what's excluded, so check the terms before you build a whole series on it.
Best for: authors aiming to publish who want editing tools on top of generation. Watch out for: credit metering; heavy drafting can burn through a lower tier.
4. NovelCrafter (bring your own key)
NovelCrafter is a planning-and-drafting workspace that doesn't ship its own AI. Its FAQ says plainly that it doesn't "offer any AI model ourselves." You connect a provider instead: OpenRouter (pay as you go, many models), Featherless (flat monthly fee for community and open-source models), or a local model through LM Studio. Another NovelCrafter help page also names Ollama for local models.
Price (as of November 2026, per novelcrafter.com/pricing): Scribe $4/month (no AI features), Hobbyist $8/month (bring your own key, scene summaries, character extraction, generate from scene beats), Artisan $14/month (adds Workshop Chat), Specialist $20/month (adds collaboration). There's a 21-day trial with all features and no card, but no free plan. Your AI usage is billed separately by whatever provider you connect.
Content policy. NovelCrafter leaves this to the model. Its NSFW guide defines NSFW as whatever a model or its provider has decided warrants moderation, and warns that providers change filters over time, so a scene that worked last month may be refused later. It also warns that trying to get around a provider's restrictions can get your provider account suspended or banned. For the most control, it points to local models, where prompts stay on your computer.
Best for: tinkerers who want to choose the exact model and already pay for API access. Watch out for: two bills (NovelCrafter plus AI usage), and rules that change with each provider.
5. AI Dungeon
AI Dungeon from Latitude is interactive fiction: you type an action, the AI narrates what happens. It's a game first and a manuscript tool second.
Price (as of November 2026, per AI Dungeon's Memberships & Benefits page):
| Tier | Price | Context | Monthly credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wanderer | Free | up to 4k tokens | 0 |
| Journey | $14.99/mo | up to 8k tokens | 760 |
| Legend | $29.99/mo | up to 16k tokens | 1,650 |
| Mythic | $49.99/mo | up to 32k tokens | 2,750 |
| Ultimate | $99.99/mo | up to 32k tokens | 5,200 |
Content policy. AI Dungeon's moderation FAQ says private, single-player stories aren't moderated (no flags, suspensions or bans) and are encrypted. The AI still has built-in boundaries; the page names content that promotes or glorifies the sexual exploitation of children. Published scenarios fall under Latitude's community guidelines and get an automatic rating: Everyone, Teen, Mature or Unrated.
Best for: adventure-style play with a free tier. Watch out for: the free tier's 4k-token context forgets quickly, and there's no book-style chapter workflow.
6. KoboldCpp (local models)
KoboldCpp is free, open-source (AGPL-3.0) software for running GGUF language models on your own computer. It bundles the KoboldAI Lite interface with chat, adventure, instruct and story-writing modes. KoboldAI Lite has Memory (text always added to the start of the prompt), Author's Note (added near the end) and World Info (keyword-triggered lore), and you set the context size yourself.
Price: the software is free. You supply the hardware and download the model. The project's wiki gives rough guidance such as a 7B model needing at least 8GB of RAM at a 2,048-token context with 4-bit quantization; larger models and longer contexts need more.
Content policy. There's no service in the middle. What the AI will write depends on the model you load, and the responsibility is yours. Note that some optional features (AI Horde, Cloudflare tunnels, the hosted Lite site) do send data over the network, so stay with the plain local server if privacy is the point. The README also warns that koboldcpp.com is a malicious fake site; download only from the official GitHub releases or koboldcpp.net.
Best for: privacy and full control. Watch out for: setup time, and small local models write noticeably weaker long fiction than large hosted ones.
Also considered
Squibler has a free plan with 500 AI credits a month, Plus at $29.99/month and Pro at $89.99/month, with PDF and DOCX export. Its pricing page doesn't state a mature-content policy and we couldn't find one, so it isn't ranked here. Perchance's story generator is widely described as free with no sign-up, but we couldn't load its official page to check current limits, so it isn't ranked either.

How to pick an uncensored AI story generator
1. Long-form memory. Every AI forgets eventually. What matters is how it forgets. Look for two things: a large context (how much recent text the AI reads each time) and a memory you control that the AI can't overwrite. A big context alone isn't enough for a 90,000-word book. Pinned notes, a story bible, or lore entries are what keep names and facts straight in chapter 30.
2. Chapter structure. Chat-style tools pile everything into one scroll. That's fine for a short scene and painful for a novel. If you want a book, pick a tool that treats chapters as units you can revise, version and reorder.
3. Export. If your goal is an e-reader file or a manuscript for an editor, check export before you write 50,000 words. EPUB and DOCX are the two formats that matter most.
4. Mature-content control. "Uncensored" can mean three different things: a service that publishes clear adult rules, a tool that passes your words to whichever provider you choose, or a local model with no service at all. A dial for heat and detail is more useful than a single NSFW switch, because most stories need different intensity in different scenes. Also look for clear hard lines; a service that states them is less likely to change the rules mid-project.
5. Privacy. Read what each tool actually says. NovelAI encrypts stories at rest; AI Dungeon says private stories are encrypted and not moderated; local tools like KoboldCpp keep everything on your machine if you avoid the online add-ons.
6. Price model. Flat-fee unlimited (NovelAI), credits (Sudowrite, AI Dungeon, Cleus), or subscription plus your own AI bill (NovelCrafter). Estimate how much you write in a month before picking.

Uncensored AI story generator FAQ
Is there an AI story generator with no filter?
Local models in KoboldCpp have no service-level filter; the model itself decides. Hosted tools all have some rules. Cleus allows adult themes with fictional adults and draws hard lines at minors and real people. AI Dungeon leaves private stories unmoderated but keeps a built-in AI filter. NovelCrafter follows whatever your AI provider allows.
What is the best NovelAI alternative in 2026?
For finishing a book with chapters and export, Cleus Story Studio. For editing tools aimed at publication, Sudowrite. For choosing your own model, NovelCrafter. For full privacy, KoboldCpp.
Can AI write a whole novel?
It can draft one, but you'll get a better book if you steer it chapter by chapter, keep a pinned memory of key facts and revise as you go. Tools with chapter structure and versioning, like Story Studio, make that much easier than a single chat thread.
Does Sudowrite allow NSFW writing?
Sudowrite's own blog says it doesn't restrict mature content and credits its Muse model. We couldn't find a formal policy page listing exclusions, so read its terms before committing.
Is there a free uncensored AI story generator?
KoboldCpp is free software if you have the hardware. Cleus gives free accounts a daily credit refill with no card. AI Dungeon has a free tier with 4k-token context. NovelAI's free trial is a one-time 50 text actions.
What's the best AI to write a novel with long memory?
Look for a large context plus memory you control. AI Dungeon's top tiers reach 32k tokens and NovelAI's Opus reaches 28,672 tokens. Cleus pairs AI-maintained story memory with up to 8,000 characters of pinned notes the AI never overwrites.
Can I export my AI-written story as an EPUB or Word file?
In Cleus Story Studio, yes: EPUB, PDF, DOCX, HTML, Markdown and TXT. Squibler lists PDF and DOCX export on paid plans. For the other tools, check each app's export menu.
