Updated November 3, 2026. Prices and policies checked on that date.
If you're on Janitor AI, you probably like two things about it: there's no heavy filter, and you can plug in your own model through the proxy settings. So when people search for a Janitor AI alternative, they rarely want a "safer" app. They want the same freedom with better memory, fewer hiccups, or no proxy fiddling at all.
Janitor itself is still running and still free. But 2026 changed it a lot. It launched its first paid plan, janitor+, on June 24, 2026, at $12.99 a month or $99 a year. The free tier keeps unlimited chats, but its built-in model, JanitorLLM, gets a context limit of around 9,000 tokens, so long roleplays forget things. A pay-per-token janitor+ Router for third-party models followed on July 30. The official app arrived in February 2026 with NSFW switched off by default, to stay in Apple's and Google's stores. Age checks through k-ID started in Australia and Brazil on April 24 and in the UK on June 15. And on November 1, Janitor's own changelog said "janitorLLM is having trouble right now."
We checked the alternatives below against their own pricing pages, docs and code. Cleus is our product, so weigh that. It's listed first, and we've tried to be plain about where it's weaker. If you're coming from Character.AI rather than Janitor, read our Character.AI alternatives guide instead.
Janitor AI alternatives: the short version
- Want to keep using your own API key or proxy? SillyTavern (free, runs on your computer) or RisuAI (free, runs in the browser). Agnaistic and Chub AI also take keys.
- Want the biggest library of bots outside Janitor? Chub AI. It works with your own key, or with a $20-a-month plan paid in crypto only.
- Want no setup at all? SpicyChat (from $5.95 a month) or CrushOn (from $5.99) are hosted apps with mature content for adults. Neither takes your own key.
- Want to bring your bots and skip the key? Cleus imports character cards and old chat logs, and has a free plan with daily credits.
- Want images in chat? SpicyChat's True Supporter plan, Chub's subscription, SillyTavern's image extension and Cleus all generate pictures.
- Want to stay free? Janitor's free tier is still one of the most generous. SillyTavern and RisuAI cost nothing, but you pay for the model you connect.

Janitor AI alternative with proxy or your own API key
This is the section most Janitor users care about. If you already pay for DeepSeek, Claude or an OpenRouter balance, the cheapest move is a front end that takes that key. Your key is portable: an OpenRouter key works in any app that accepts an OpenAI-style endpoint.
Two things to know before you move it:
- OpenRouter's free models have a daily cap. It's 50 requests a day, or 1,000 once you've bought at least 10 credits. Janitor's own help center uses the same OpenRouter setup in its proxy guides.
- Reverse proxies are a risk. Chub's docs put it bluntly: proxies run by third parties can see your data and IP address, may log chats, and may run on stolen keys. Use official keys you control.
1. Cleus: best if you want your bots without any key
Disclosure: this is us.
Cleus is an uncensored AI app with chat, characters, images and video. It doesn't take your own API key, which is the point: there's nothing to configure. Its main chat model, Cleus Smartest v3, is an abliterated version of DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, meaning its refusal behaviour was removed. If your Janitor proxy runs DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, it's the same base model. Our DeepSeek V4.1 Flash roleplay guide covers how to get the most from it.
- Import: the import page reads character cards as .png or .json, from SillyTavern, Chub, RisuAI, Agnaistic or Janitor exports, plus Character.AI data and pasted text. Paste an old chat log and it becomes memories, so the character remembers you.
- What you get: thousands of community characters, chats laid out like Instagram DMs, voice notes, selfies, characters that text first, and bond levels. There's also Story Studio for long-form fiction and Imagine for images and video. Premium members can turn on end-to-end encrypted chats.
- Content: adult roleplay is allowed with adult characters. Characters marked NSFW are never listed publicly.
- Price: free plan with daily credits and no card. Premium is $9.95 a month. Images, video and voice use credits, from $10.
- Weak spots: no bring-your-own-key, so you can't pick any model you like. The public library is far smaller than Janitor's or Chub's. And it's a web app you can install on your phone, not a native App Store app.
2. SillyTavern: best free front end for your own key
SillyTavern is free, open-source software you install on your own machine: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android through Termux, or Docker. It's built around character cards and connects to almost any model, local or in the cloud.
- Price: the software is free under the AGPL-3.0 license. You pay only for the model you connect.
- Content: it has no content policy of its own. What's allowed depends on the model and provider you use.
- Images: an image extension supports local and cloud sources, including Stable Diffusion, FLUX, DALL-E and OpenRouter.
- Who it's for: Janitor users who already proxy and want lorebooks, group chats, personas and full control. Version 1.19.0 shipped on September 14, 2026.
- Weak spots: setup takes real effort, and it lives on one device unless you host it yourself.
3. Chub AI: best big bot library that takes your key
Chub AI is the closest thing to Janitor in feel: a large library of user-made characters with a chat front end attached. It works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, NovelAI and local Kobold or Ooba backends.
- Price: one plan, $20 a month, which covers all of Chub's own models, including Soji, plus voice and multimedia generation. It's paid in crypto only. Chub says card processors are the main source of censorship pressure.
- Free: new users get one-time trial credits worth "a few dozen messages." If you connect your own key instead, you pay that provider.
- Content: Chub describes its own models as uncensored and says it doesn't meaningfully restrict characters or interactions.
- Weak spots: crypto-only billing is a hurdle for many people. Chub's own docs warn against reverse proxies.
4. RisuAI: best key-based app that runs in the browser
RisuAI is free, open-source roleplay software. You can use it on the risuai.net website with no install, as a desktop app, or self-hosted with Docker. Its code reads V2 and V3 character cards.
- Price: free under GPL-3.0. You pay for the model you connect: OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, DeepInfra, OpenRouter or a local backend.
- Features: group chats, lorebooks, long-term memory compression, translation, text-to-speech, and emotion images that change with the character's mood.
- Who it's for: people who want SillyTavern-style control on a phone or a borrowed laptop. The latest release came out October 30, 2026.
- Weak spots: there's no official Android or iOS app, and image generation isn't among its listed features.
5. Agnaistic: best for a hosted free model plus your keys
Agnaistic (agnai.chat) is an open-source, multi-user chat app that runs in the browser. It now hosts its own models, so you can start chatting free without a key, and you can add OpenAI, Claude, OpenRouter, NovelAI, Kobold, Horde and other services.
- Price: subscriptions remove ads and unlock better models, but prices only appear after you sign in, so we haven't ranked it.
- Features: image generation, memory books, long-term memory, group chats, and V2 card import, including straight from Chub.
- Weak spots: it's a smaller project. Its code was last updated in June 2026, and it doesn't publish a content policy summary we could check.
Janitor AI alternatives with no filter and no setup
These are hosted apps. You don't need a key, and mature content is allowed for adults. The trade-off is that you can't swap in your own model.
6. SpicyChat: best no-key app with images
SpicyChat is a large hosted character platform, run by NextDay AI, with a free tier.
- Price: Get a Taste is $5.95 a month, True Supporter $19.95 and I'm All In $29.95. Paying yearly saves 17%.
- What each tier adds: Get a Taste removes ads and waiting lines. True Supporter doubles memory to 8K and adds in-chat images and more models. I'm All In goes to 32K memory and adds voice replies.
- Content and age: mature chat is allowed for adults. Third-party reporting says adult chat needs a selfie or ID check in 26 US states and several countries.
- Weak spots: no own-key option, and the free tier's memory is 4K.
7. CrushOn: best for many price tiers
CrushOn is a web-based character chat site that markets itself as having no filter.
- Price: Standard is $5.99 a month, Premium $14.99 and Luxe $39.99, with higher tiers above that. Annual plans start at $4.90 a month. A former unlimited Deluxe plan is marked "Retired."
- Free: 100 message credits a month and free models that don't use credits, but free chat history is deleted after 7 days of inactivity.
- Memory: 8K on the free tier, 16K models on paid plans and 24K on the top tiers.
- Weak spots: credits get used up on better models, there's no own-key option, and the pricing table is complicated.
What about Kindroid and Nomi?
If you want one long-term companion rather than a roleplay library, Kindroid and Nomi are the usual picks. We compared them in our Character.AI alternatives guide. Neither takes your own API key.
Free Janitor AI alternatives
"Free" means different things here:
- Free software, paid model: SillyTavern and RisuAI. With OpenRouter's free models you can chat at zero cost within the daily cap.
- Free hosted tier: SpicyChat, CrushOn, Agnaistic and Cleus. Each limits memory, models or messages.
- Free trial only: Chub's subscription gives one-time trial credits.
Honestly, Janitor's own free tier, with unlimited chats on JanitorLLM, is hard to beat on price. People usually leave for memory, reliability or features, not cost.
Janitor AI alternatives with images
If you want pictures alongside your roleplay:
- SpicyChat: in-chat images from True Supporter ($19.95 a month).
- Chub AI: multimedia generation is part of the $20 plan.
- SillyTavern: connect an image source through its image extension.
- Agnaistic: built-in image generation through third-party services.
- Cleus: character selfies plus a full image and video studio, paid with credits.
How to move from Janitor AI
Moving your Janitor setup somewhere else
Works for any of the apps above.
JanitorLLM, the janitor+ Router or your own key through the proxy settings? Your answer decides whether you need a front end that takes keys (SillyTavern, RisuAI, Agnaistic, Chub) or a hosted app that does not need one.
One honest warning: many Janitor creators hide their bots' definitions. Export only characters you made or ones whose creators share the definition. For the wider picture on what happens to your data when an AI app runs into trouble, see our explainer on the Character.AI bankruptcy.
Quick check before you switch
Five questions from this guide.
Roughly how much context does Janitor's free tier give its built-in model?
Janitor AI alternatives FAQ
What is the best Janitor AI alternative in 2026?
It depends on how you use Janitor. If you proxy with your own key, SillyTavern or RisuAI give you the most control for free. If you want a big bot library plus keys, try Chub AI. If you want no setup, SpicyChat and CrushOn are hosted. If you want to bring your bots without a key, Cleus imports character cards.
Is there a free Janitor AI alternative?
Yes. SillyTavern and RisuAI are free, open-source apps, and OpenRouter's free models allow 50 requests a day at no cost. SpicyChat, CrushOn, Agnaistic and Cleus have free tiers with limits on memory, models or messages. Janitor's own free tier still offers unlimited chats on its built-in model, with around 9,000 tokens of context.
Which Janitor AI alternative has no filter?
SillyTavern, RisuAI and Agnaistic have no filter of their own; it depends on the model you connect. Chub calls its models uncensored. SpicyChat and CrushOn allow mature content for adults, though SpicyChat requires age checks in some places. Cleus allows adult roleplay with adult characters.
Which Janitor AI alternatives allow a proxy or your own API key?
SillyTavern, RisuAI, Agnaistic and Chub AI all accept your own API key, including OpenRouter. SpicyChat, CrushOn and Cleus don't; they run their own models. Use official keys rather than shared reverse proxies, which can log your chats, see your IP address and run on stolen keys.
Is there a Janitor AI alternative with images?
Yes. SpicyChat adds in-chat images on its $19.95 True Supporter plan. Chub includes multimedia generation in its $20 plan. SillyTavern supports image generation through an extension, and Agnaistic has image generation built in. Cleus offers character selfies plus a separate image and video studio, paid with credits.
Can I move my Janitor AI bots to another site?
Bots you made, yes: copy the personality, scenario, first message and example dialogue, or save them as a character card. SillyTavern, RisuAI, Agnaistic and Cleus read cards. Bots by other creators with hidden definitions usually can't be exported, and you should respect that choice.
Is Janitor AI shutting down?
There's no sign of that. Janitor is still updating its app and site, and its help center says a free option will always remain. It does have rough patches: on November 1, 2026, its changelog reported that JanitorLLM was having trouble. Users in Australia, Brazil and the UK now face a one-time age check.
Is it safe to use a reverse proxy on Janitor AI?
It's risky. A reverse proxy is someone else's server sitting between you and the model. Chub's documentation warns that proxy operators can see your data and IP address, may keep logs, and sometimes use stolen API keys. Your own official key, or a hosted app, is safer. Never paste a key into a site you don't trust.
