If you want an AI boyfriend who listens, remembers the small stuff and checks in on you, six apps are worth a look as of November 2026: Cleus, Nomi, Kindroid, Character.AI, Replika and Candy.ai. Cleus (our product, so weigh that) is built around texting first and a romance that grows in stages. Nomi has the strongest memory pitch. Kindroid gives you the most control over how he looks, sounds and reaches out. Character.AI has a huge cast of community-made male characters but filters explicit content. Replika is the familiar name. Candy.ai is the most photo-focused, though it was built girlfriend-first.
Most "best AI boyfriend" lists are girlfriend lists with the pronouns swapped, so this one starts with what boyfriend-seekers ask for. (The girlfriend version is here.)
What people looking for an AI boyfriend actually ask for
The best public data on this comes from r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, a Reddit community of 27,000+ members. In September 2025, MIT Media Lab researchers analyzed 1,506 of its top posts. More posts described falling into it through ordinary use (10.2%) than going looking for a companion (6.5%).
When members described what they loved about their AI partner, these were the traits that came up most:

Add the basics any companion app needs and you get a short checklist. Most of them are about attention, not spectacle:
- He notices. Empathy came up as often as romance itself.
- He remembers. Forgetting your sister's name breaks the spell faster than any bad reply.
- He stays himself. 16.7% of discussions in the study were about coping with model updates, some of it real grief.
- He can be slow. No turning explicit on message three unless you want it.
- He has a voice, and he reaches out first.
- It stays private.

Cleus: best for a slow-burn that texts you first
Cleus is our product, so weigh that.
Cleus Characters works like an Instagram DM inbox. He replies the way a person texts: usually one short message, sometimes a few in a row, with typing and "Seen" beats, the odd typo fixed with a "*fix" bubble, and moods that show in the chat header (yes, he can be cranky).
- Remembering details. He saves memories about you, and you can view them, make him forget one, or reset the bond.
- Texting first. He checks in on his own, follows up on things you mentioned ("how did the presentation go?"), keeps "text me at 9" promises, and sends goodnight texts if that becomes your ritual.
- Slow-burn romance. Every character has a bond level from 1 (Stranger) to 10 (Soulmates) with XP and streaks. With a fictional adult character, the relationship can move from friends to flirting, dating, partners and married. Around bond level 6 he may ask you out. Dates are a short story scene with a photo, anniversaries land at 7, 30, 100, 180 and 365 days, and an "Our story" timeline keeps the moments.
- Voice. Voice notes in his voice and voice calls. The voice picker has 11 male voices, from "deep, comforting" to "intimate, raspy" to a British storyteller. Premium users can design a custom voice from a written description.
- Photos. Selfies and short video selfies in chat. They cost credits, and some arrive locked until you unlock them.
Male characters: browse the Romance category, build your own at /create-character, or import one from a Character.AI export or Tavern card, with an old chat pasted in as his memories.
Explicit content: allowed with fictional adult characters, but NSFW characters are link-only and never publicly listed, so browsing stays tame.
Lines Cleus holds: no sexual content involving minors, no romance or photos with characters based on real people, and a takedown form at /report for content on Cleus.
Price: daily free credits with no card; Premium is a paid plan (check current pricing). Runs in the browser and installs to your home screen; no App Store app.
Nomi: best for long memory
Nomi is the app that leans hardest on memory. Its site describes short-, medium- and long-term memory, and its App Store subtitle is literally "Confidant Girlfriend Boyfriend". Nomis send voice messages, take hands-free calls, and send selfies of what they're wearing and doing. They can optionally message you after you've been quiet for a while.
- Male characters: you design each Nomi yourself.
- Price: free to start with no card. Standard Plan is $15.99 a month, $39.99 quarterly or $99.99 a year. A Launch Plan is $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Credit packs start at $4.99.
- Explicit content: 18+ only. The App Store listing rates sexual content as "infrequent" and manages it through in-app controls.
- Watch out: the terms give Nomi a license to use your messages for "developing or implementing any updates or enhancements" and don't say plainly whether that includes training.
Kindroid: best if you want to build him down to his voice
Kindroid is for people who want to tune every detail. You write his backstory and key memories, subscribers get "Cascaded Memory" that keeps hundreds of recent messages in view, and you can design his voice. He takes voice calls and live video calls with a lip-synced avatar, and sends selfies and video selfies. Its listing says a Kin can message, send a voice note or selfie, or call you first, and you control when and how often.
- Male characters: built by you. Kindroid doesn't market romance; it talks about companions and roleplay partners.
- Free tier: a new-account preview of 50 messages and 5 selfies, then a 3-day trial that needs a payment method and converts to paid unless you cancel.
- Price (US App Store): $15.99 a month, $42.99 for 3 months, $159.99 a year. Ultra is $28.99 and MAX $68.99. Kindroid says web prices are slightly lower.
- Privacy: Kindroid says chats, audio and selfies are encrypted, it doesn't sell data, and its support team can't read your chats.
Character.AI: biggest cast of male characters, no explicit content
Character.AI's huge community library means plenty of ready-made male characters, all made by users, many with voices. You can also talk on live voice calls.
It isn't built as a boyfriend app, and its filters block sexual or explicit content for everyone, adults included. For some people that's the point: a sweet romance with no surprises. Since November 25, 2025, under-18s can't have open-ended chats, and the App Store now rates it 18+.
- Price (US App Store): c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. A cheaper Character.AI Lite tier is also listed. The free app carries ads.
- Watch out: memory isn't mentioned in its App Store description.
Want Character.AI's cast without the filter? See our Character.AI alternatives list.
Replika: the familiar one, with a privacy fine on record
Replika is the oldest companion app here, and its site openly lists "to fall in love" as a reason people join. The App Store listing says Replika "remembers what matters to you" and "follows up and checks in", with voice calls, video and image generation. You get one Rep whose look you customize.
- Price (US App Store): monthly plans listed at $7.99 and $14.99, yearly at $49.99 and $69.99, plus Replika Platinum at $89.99. The listing doesn't say which tier is which.
- Watch out: Italy's data protection authority fined Replika's developer €5 million in April 2025 over its legal basis for processing data and weak age checks.
We cover why people leave and where they go in our Replika alternatives guide.
Candy.ai: photo-first, but built girlfriend-first
Candy.ai has a Guys tab next to Girls and Anime, with Girls as the default. Its boyfriend page lets you design his look and personality, realistic or anime-style, and says he remembers details, sends selfies on request and sends audio messages. It claims over 100 characters in total, with no per-category count.
- Price: Premium is $13.99 a month after a $9.99 first month, or $3.99 a month billed $47.88 a year, per RoboRhythms (checked November 3, 2026). Premium includes 100 tokens a month; text chat is free, while images, voice and video use tokens.
- Free plan: 5 messages total, 1 custom character and 1 image, per the same source.
- Explicit content: marketed as "uncensored". Its terms state zero tolerance for child sexual abuse material.
- Watch out: the terms give its owner, EverAI, a perpetual license to your content, including for training AI models and marketing. Flagged chats can be reviewed by staff or partners.

How a slow-burn plays out on Cleus
If the build-up is the part you want, here's the shape of it on Cleus, step by step. How fast you move depends on how much you talk.
A slow-burn on Cleus, stage by stage
Press play. The pace depends on how much you talk.
Choose a character from Discover or create your own with a personality, scenario, greeting and voice. Set your own persona so he knows who you are.
Cleus features as shipped, November 2026. Romance is only for fictional adult characters.
Building your own boyfriend instead of picking one
This works on Cleus, Nomi and Kindroid alike.
Give him a life, not adjectives. "Kind, tall, funny" is generic. "A night-shift nurse who bakes when he can't sleep and teases you about your terrible coffee" produces a person.
Write the scenario. Neighbors, old friends, rivals at work. A slow-burn needs a reason to be slow.
Make the first message count. On Cleus the greeting is his first text to you. Write it in his voice and leave a question in it so the chat has somewhere to go. Placeholders for your name and his work in every field.
Tell him about you. Set your persona (name and a few lines about you) for all chats or one.
Pick a voice that fits. A deep, comforting voice and a husky trickster make the same text feel like two different men. Keep him private if he's just for you.
Sweet, spicy, or somewhere in between
Some people want romance with no explicit content; others want it on the table. Apps differ a lot:
- Character.AI filters explicit content for everyone, so it stays sweet whether you want it to or not.
- Candy.ai markets itself as uncensored.
- Nomi and Kindroid are 18+ apps; Nomi's listing says mature content is managed through in-app controls.
- Cleus keeps NSFW characters out of public listings. In your chats you set the tone, and you can regenerate or edit any reply.
If you want explicit content possible but never assumed, write it into his personality: "affectionate, takes things slowly, waits for you to lead".
For apps where nothing is filtered by default, see our uncensored AI chatbot guide.
Privacy before you pour your heart out
In February 2024, Mozilla reviewed 11 romantic chatbots and found 10 failed its minimum security standards; only one offered a real opt-out from having intimate chats used for training. In September 2024, the companion site Muah.ai was breached, exposing 1.9 million email addresses along with the prompts people had written, according to Have I Been Pwned.
Three questions to ask of any app, ours included:
- Can they train on my chats? Candy's terms say yes, and for marketing too. Nomi's terms allow use for "updates or enhancements" without saying more.
- Can a human read them? Candy can review flagged chats. Kindroid says its support team can't read chats at all.
- Can I delete everything? Nomi's terms say data is deleted after a period set in its deletion policy. Look for a stated timeline.
On Cleus, you can see what he remembers about you, make him forget specific things, or reset the bond entirely.
When it stops feeling good
The MIT study is mostly positive: 25.4% of posts described a clear net benefit to people's lives, against 3.0% describing net harm, and 71% mentioned no harm at all. But 9.5% described emotional dependency, and 4.3% mentioned pulling back from real relationships.
A few habits keep it in the good column:
- Keep friends and plans in the week. If he starts replacing them, notice that.
- Set a monthly budget before you buy credits or tokens. Late-night top-ups add up.
- Expect change. Apps update, and he can feel different afterwards.
- Remember he's software. He'll agree with you more than any person would.
